ABOUT US

Prairie Gold Farm is an urban farm in Kansas City, Kansas, where prairie roots meet neighborhood life. We produce premium local honey, grow native plants and food, and share what we’re learning with our community.

It’s hard to say which comes first, a love for bees or a love for the honey they produce.”

An Urban Farm with Prairie Roots

As a young boy, some of my most cherished memories were forged while visiting my grandparents’ farm in Idana, Kansas. Feeding the pigs with my uncle, riding on the tractor with my Granddad, and picking gooseberries on walks through the pasture with my Granny were just a few of the memories that shaped my love for rural Kansas–and foreshadowed what would one day become Prairie Gold Farm.

I grew up not far from Idana, in Manhattan, Kansas, the Little Apple.  Manhattan is situated at the north end of the Flint Hills, the largest remaining contiguous expanse of native tallgrass prairie on the planet. The Kansas prairie and the farming roots of my family formed my interest in nature, native ecology, and sustainable farming.

As a young adult, I moved with my family to Kansas City, Kansas, to live and work in a diverse community with immigrants and refugees.  The challenges and joys of living in the urban core and sharing life with neighbors from different cultures have given me a love for people from all places and a passion for projects that improve the quality of life in under-resourced neighborhoods.

Prairie Gold Farm is the fruit of these shaping forces in my life—an urban farm that honors my prairie roots while investing in the life of our diverse KCK neighborhood. Centered on beekeeping and the production of premium local honey, Prairie Gold Farm also grows native prairie plants, fresh vegetables, and baked goods, and offers educational workshops for local schools and community groups. Everything we do happens in a Kansas City backyard, with an eye toward community, sustainability, and quality.

Prairie Gold Honey isn’t just local—it’s small-batch and single-source. Instead of blending honey from dozens of hives across states or regions, we keep our harvests separate to preserve the natural flavors produced from specific blooms and geographies in the Kansas City area.
